For Immediate Release Whole Fragment Oct. 15
- Nov. 9, 2007 Artists: Catalogue Contributors: Catalogue design: Whole Fragment is a theme inspired by American poet Ann Lauterbach's essay of the same name. In this 1999 essay, Lauterbach ends by exclaiming, At the interstices of an environment of sameness and homogeneity (which purports to be variety and vitality) there is still the possibility of an organizing intelligence that must select one it/is over another. These selections or choices are what finally or eventually allow us to participate in the making of meaning, however flawed, however partial it is. This exhibition includes art that uses combinations of pieces, accumulation and precariousness as a system to create and understand new forms. Amongst the artworks, this show includes a massive sculptural-object wall painting; a piece made up of eighty black and white photographs; and a floor mosaic made of hand-painted velvet. The catalogue includes an introduction by Kirk Robertson, a new essay by Ann Lauterbach, an email exchange between Tim Griffin and Ann Lauterbach, and poems by Joel Felix and Tim Griffin. During installation the gallery will be open limited hours to the public and school groups while Ms. Brewster will utilize the help of art students to create a gigantic sculptural wall painting, while Losang Samten will also be in residence for two weeks to create his sand mandala in the Ansari Business Building.
